Andaman Sea and Island

One of the islands on the Malaysian side is Penang which morphed into a retirement destination after colonial time faded away. A tour to discover this brings people to one of the last underwater paradises on earth. This part of the world is also easily accessible from the USA and Europe via Bangkok and Singapore (Changi) Airport.

In the Andaman Sea

The island world of this part of the Indian Ocean is relatively untouched, before the 16th Century only Chinese trader moved into the area to buy or rather exchanged pearls and other goods with the Sea Gypsies of the Myeik Archipelago and behind. The part which belongs to today Myanmar has changed several times between them and Thailand.

Andaman Sea History.

In the 17th. Century the coastal city of Mergui (Today Myeik) as it was formerly know belonged to the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It fell into the hand of the British after they annexed Burma. The city was an important place on the map of the East India Company because it functioned as a restock and trading center on the trip from Calcutta to Penang. Goods have been unloaded here and moved on the back of elephants to the Gulf of Thailand and further to Ayutthaya China and Japan.

Outstanding scuba diving destinations are the Similan Islands off Khao Lak accessible by tours from Phuket and by speedboat from Khao Lak via Lam Ru Pier a couple of kilometers before.
Plenty of tropical fish sea snakes sea horses whale sharks white sharks sting rays and other big game reside in these waters.

The Thailand and Myanmar Andaman Sea is a very large area with countless fine coastal strips (see the map), so you can be sure not to see many tourists around, in particular at the Andaman Nicobar Islands which are under Indian control and the access is restricted. The best known Andaman Island beaches are at Phuket and here the number one is Patong Beach. The most famous inhabitants of the area are the Sea Gypsies called Salon in Myanmar and Moken in Thailand.

The Andaman Sea center is Phuket.

The Andaman Sea tourist center is Phuket's West Coast with Patong Kata and Karon Beach. This is the entertainment and amusement center of south Thailand during day and night. The interesting activities are day trips to the north which is Khao Lak and Khao Sok National Park with a huge reservoir set into the wilderness. There are trekking trails are available , small waterfalls, tree houses, rivers to paddle and a whole floating village on the lake including cottages to stay and make some tours. Phuket Patong Nightlife at Soi Crocodile Patong Tiger Bar guarantees a hot night Here is one of the most active and attractive tourism destination in the world with fascinating waterfronts, islands, a great underwater world, coral reefs, lush tropical jungle, excellent food and on the Thailand side the best nightlife in the world, in particular on Phuket island on the other side of the Gulf of Thailand is Pattaya with a similar setting and Bangkok. On the road to Malaysia is Hat Yai and at Danko / Sadao at the Thai-Malaysia border again an incredible nightlife. Activities are diving, island hopping, big game fishing plus an unrestrained nightlife. Taking pictures, water sports, trekking, hiking, elephant rides or just sit down at bar or club, drink some beer and watch the bar girls. There are several marine parks, one of them is around the Similan Islands, another is Ko Tarutao and several more. Other famous islands are Ko Samui & Ko Phangan and so on, it is evident there is something going in the south of Thailand. There is Ranong about 300km north of Phuket and the gateway to south Myanmar, Ranong is the biggest harbor on the Thai west coast. Thailand's deep south has a big problem with Muslim insurgency who are killing people by the dozen almost every day. These lunatics go preferable after Buddhist Monks and Teachers and are burning down schools frequently. What a rotten mind this person must have who are killing monks and even temple boys all in the name of Islam.
